Abstract
A case finding survey for gastric cancer during a period of 1973-1975 was carried out in all provinces of Korea except for Cheju-Do. Three to seven communities from each province were chosen and all residents over thirty years of age were recommended to be examined. The examination, however, was limited to 6,514 volunteers. Therefore, the prevalence rate was not able to be evaluated. Forty seven in order to confirm inpressions obtained from a study of our hospital records, information on items of etiological importance, such as occupational factor, dietary habits, gastric symptoms were obtained by an interview method.
1. Crude detection rate of gastric cancer was 0.72% of all examined, and the rate for males was four times of females.
2. A significant difference in detection rates between the provinces was noted : Kyung-Puk and Chun-Puk provinces which are located in mid-southern part of the peninsula showed the highest, while the southern parts and Seoul showed the significantly lower rates.
3. The detection rate became higher in accordance with the increase of age.
4. Gastric cancer was also detected in asymptomatic grup, although the rate was on fourth of the symptomatic group.
5. The detection rate of employees was significantly lower than those of farmers or fishes
6. From these results and our previous hospital records study, authors conclude that the geographic distribution of gastric cancer exist in the peninsula, and strees the early detection of asymptomatic cases.
